In December 2009, the Metabolic Disorders Steering Committee launched its third project: Establishing Criteria for the Diagnosis of Clinically Important Weakness Associated with Low Muscle Mass in Older Adults.

Six grants were awarded by FNIH to the following Principal Investigators and academic institutions:

1. Dawn Alley, University of Maryland;
2. Peggy Cawthon, California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute;
3. Thuy-Tien Dam, Columbia University;
4. Anne Kenny, University of Connecticut;
5. Robert McLean, Harvard University; and,
6. Carmen Sceppa, Northeastern University.

For performing data analysis over the course of 12 months on many observational and clinical trials as a part of the Phase I of the Sarcopenia Project. The Sarcopenia Project Team Chair is Dr. Stephanie Studenski from the University of Pittsburgh who is also going to head the Coordinating Center for the data analysis. The project currently has 4 pharmaceutical company sponsors, and FNIH is in the fundraising stages for the second phase of the project, which will involve the organization of the Sarcopenia Consensus Summit and the publication of a journal supplement with all the results from the Phase I data analysis findings.

The kick-off meeting of the PI team took place on March 8-9, 2010 in Bethesda, MD. The consensus summit is being planned for Summer 2011.
